Women lift women, women move in resistance, in compassion, and with purpose.
Razvan Stoian, principal Battery Dance dancer and choreographer, gives Antonio Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater, RV 621, punch and stunning flow with an ensemble of eight female dance artists who interpret the never-before-seen dance piece for a contemporary audience. James P. Stanton, The Stanton Firm, LLC, produces. First performed in 1712, the music, courtesy of Warner Classics UK Ltd, is a meditation, and demands transcendence. Here, women lift women, women move in resistance, in compassion, and with purpose. Just as does its companion piece, A Fortnight at Tripler, also found here, tragedy is brightened by hope, so Razvan’s dancers moving in homage to lament do skillfully express their hopes in the final stanza’s prayer “Amen,” so be it.
